Operators Increase Customized Handset Purchases

Operator-customized handsets are becoming more common in the Chinese market. Statistics show that in 2006 China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) sold 16.6 million GSM handsets, and is expected to sell 20 million next year. China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) sold 5.6 million CDMA units, a figure expected to reach 10 million in 2008.

According to an industry insider, China Netcom (NYSE: CN; 0906.HK) and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) are also developing strategies for customized mobile phones. Both operators already have PHS / GSM dual mode phones, and China Netcom is currently secretly developing a Wi-Fi / GSM phone in preparation for the imminent award of a 3G license.
