Rumor: China Telecom to Roll Out IM

DoNews, 11/13/07

According to an informed source, China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) subsidiary China Telecom Information Development is recruiting staff for an instant messaging (IM) project.

Dongguan Telecom previously launched its own IM software, Kuanle Messenger, which allowed contact management, chatting, and SMS functions.

LENS: Established as a wholly owned subsidiary of Beijing Telecom in 1998, China Information Development Co. Ltd. (Xinyuan Gongzhong) focuses on value-added service (VAS) development. In October 2005, it won the exclusive rights to operate China Telecom's wireless value-added services business, and since then has gradually shifted its business focus to wireless. Currently it is offering VAS for not only China Telecom's PHS business, but also for China Mobile.
