NDRC Approves Production of TD-SCDMA Chipsets and Handsets

Caijing, 11/16/07

According to a China Wireless (2369.HK) statement made on November 15, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) wrote to the Shenzhen Development and Reform Commission October 31, allowing it to license China Wireless subsidiary Yulong to manufacture TD-SCDMA chipsets and handsets.

This is the first time the NDRC has approved TD-SCDMA manufacture. Six firms were licensed, including Bird.

Earlier reports have claimed that China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK), which is operating large-scale commercial trials of TD-SCDMA, has been very unhappy with the handsets offered, leading to repeated delays in procurement plans.
