NDRC Awards 9 More TD-SCDMA Handset Licenses

21st Century Business Herald, 11/20/07

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has licensed a further nine manufacturers to produce TD-SCDMA handsets, including Huawei, Yulong and Bird (600130.SH). This is in addition to six firms, including ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ), Hisense (600060.SH), Haier and Datang Mobile - participants in TD-SCDMA trials run by China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) and other operators - who have previously been awarded licenses.

China Mobile plans to launch its first round of TD-SCDMA handset procurement in December or January. This will see the purchase of between 300,000 to 400,000 handsets to be used in the testing and optimization of TD-SCDMA networks and for evaluation to inform next year's larger-scale procurements.
