SARFT to Broadcast DTMB Signal by Year-End

Lmtw.com, 11/28/07

Professor Yang Hexing, head of Tsinghua University's Digital TV Standards project, has revealed that the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) is planning to broadcast a Digital Terrestrial Multimedia Broadcasting (DTMB) signal before the end of the year. The broadcasts will cover urban and rural areas in Sichuan, Guangdong, Shandong and Jiangsu, along with the six cities hosting Olympic events. Hong Kong is also to use the national standard from December 31.

According to information from Professor Yang, thirty-one cities are currently using Tsinghua's DMB-T standard, and seventeen using the European DVB-T standard. Sparsely populated provinces such as Qinghai and Tibet do not currently have terrestrial DTV plans.

Professor Yang also indicated that mobile TV will be the application of the future, and that parts of the standard are being adjusted to meet mobile TV needs.
