Tencent Enters DTV and Handset Sectors

Xinhua News, 12/12/07

Tencent (0700.HK), TCL Corporation (000100.SZ), and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) will soon launch their jointly developed "Digital TV QQ" platform, allowing users not only to watch TV programs, but also to chat with online friends and play embedded QQ casual games.

Plans for Tencent's "QQ Mobile Phone" have also surfaced, with earlier rumors that Tencent would cooperate with domestic PMP manufacturer Meizu confirmed by someone within Tencent. Currently, the Java QQ integrated into Meizu handsets doesn't provide any breakthrough applications, but the two companies will work on developing a two-way video function for the "QQ Mobile Phone".
