Rumor: Datang Mobile to Shift Focus to LTE

Sohu IT, 12/18/07

Rumors are circulating that Datang Mobile is to put TD-SCDMA on the back-burner and focus on research and promotion of the 4G LTE standard. According to a source close to the firm, an internal restructuring is underway: "The company may only retain researchers, with other arrangements to be made for marketing staff for TD-SCDMA networks, network equipment and handsets."

LTE has been identified as the successor to TD-SCDMA, and its use would extend the lifespan of TD-SCDMA.

According to an informed source, two LTE versions will be produced in 2010, meaning Datang does not have much time.

Datang Mobile deputy GM Zhu Yingjian has previously said that staff numbers responsible for TD-SCDMA upgrades have increased from 150 to 850, and that TD-SCDMA will be upgraded to 4G in 2010.

Datang Mobile made no official response to the rumors.
