SARFT Reveals 2008 CMMB Roadmap

Netease, 12/28/07

At a meeting held by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT)'s Academy of Broadcasting Science (ABS) and Academy of Broadcasting Planning (ABP), ABP Directory Jiang Wenbo indicated that since August, installation of terrestrial CMMB coverage has been underway in the six Olympic host cities, Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Beijing now has three transmitters. In early 2008 UHF coverage will be provided in 35 provincial capitals and directly-administered municipalities, with bidding for supply contracts underway. Plans for coverage in Guiyang and Lhasa have not been put together, but in the future these cities will be included, bringing the total number of cities covered to 37. All cities will first add a CMMB transmitter to their existing TV towers, saving on construction costs. Beijing will have a total of 10 transmitters.

A SARFT official indicated that competition for CMMB is not an issue, as it is the only mobile TV standard to have full broadcasting authority support. According to Jiang Wenbo, CMMB will be ready for commercial use in 2008, and he has guaranteed that CMMB services will be available for the 2008 Olympics.
