China Maps National Strategy for IPR Protection

21st Century Business Herald, 1/10/08

Wang Ziqiang, head of the National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC)'s Copyright Management Department, has said that China is to reveal a national IP protection strategy in 2008, specifying the principles, orientation and results of IP protection. This will include one main strategy and 20 sub-strategies which will provide further details and regulations for agencies and law-enforcement agencies. Late last year NCAC started the second round of drafting of the Copyright Law, and third drafts of the Patent Law and Trademark Law are also underway.

According to Wang, a rapid increase in cases of online piracy in recent years means that the Internet would be a major target for NCAC in the future. On December 6 last year, a project to construct a digital copyright monitoring and certification platform was launched, which will provide a new combined copyright management and services model and monitor online piracy.
