SMIC to Build Shenzhen Production Facility

Chinese chip maker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC) has announced that it will invest USD 1.58 bln in a new integrated circuit (IC) production facility in Shenzhen.

SMIC will establish an independent legal entity called Semiconductor Manufacturing International (Shenzhen) Corp. Ltd., which will build an IC technology R&D center, an 8-inch wafer production line and a 12-inch chip fabricating factory. The 12-inch fab will license advanced process technology from IBM.

SMIC plans to begin construction of the facility in the first half of 2008, with the 8-inch wafer production line to start manufacturing by the end of 2009.
