HSDPA, EDGE Not Supported by Earlier TD-SCDMA Handsets

China Business News, 2/22/08

A marketing manager at a TD-SCDMA chipset manufacturer has revealed that while the handsets acquired by China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) in its first round of procurement allow automatic switching between TD-SCDMA and GSM networks, they do not support HSDPA or EDGE and have maximum data speeds of only 384Kbps. This is due to the use of early-model TD-SCDMA chipsets in order to bring the phones to market on schedule.

Genuine large-scale procurement is expected to include HSDPA and EDGE functionality, with Commit and other manufacturers currently working on the necessary chipsets. These are expected to be ready for use in time for the Olympics in August.
