MII Merger May Delay Telecom Restructuring

South Metropolitan News, 3/13/08

A source in the broadcasting sector has said that after the merger of the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) the integration of mobile, fixed-line, and TV networks is likely to be overseen by the broadcasting authorities.

Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) professor Kan Kaili indicated that telecommunications supervision may be weakened after the changes, with the new Ministry of Industry and Information more focused on the manufacturing sector and potentially placing too much emphasis on that end of the industry chain.

An MII official meanwhile said that the ministry shake-up may influence the telecom sector restructuring. The new ministry is expected to require at least two or three months to clarify actual work responsibilities, and the telecom restructuring is therefore likely to take place after the Olympics.
