Jiangsu Telecom to Halt ADSL and Expand FTTH

Sina Tech, 3/14/08

Broadband expert and Fiberhome Group chief engineer Mao Qian recently revealed that China Telecom's (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) Jiangsu branch has launched bidding for contracts to supply Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) equipment. He added that by the end of June, the operator will have stopped all ADSL rollout. Meanwhile China Netcom (NYSE: CN; 0906.HK) is rapidly moving forward with FTTH trials, particularly in Beijing.

However, which FTTH format will be used has been the subject of debate. According to Mao, EPON is more mature and interconnection issues between equipment from different manufacturers have been solved, making it the usual choice. GPON tests in China, in contrast, have been disappointing.
