Operators Announce February 2008 Subscriber Totals

Marbridge Consulting, 3/20/08

China's four main telecom operators have announced their subscriber totals for February 2008.

Mobile operators continued to see strong growth in user uptake. China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) added 8 mln subscribers, its largest monthly gain to date, to reach 384 mln, while China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) added 1.5 mln new subs (1.2 mln GSM subs and 278,000 CDMA subs) to reach 165 mln (123 mln GSM subs and 42.5 mln CDMA subs).

Fixed-line operators suffered further user-base declines. China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) lost 1 mln fixed-line subs, bringing its total to 218 mln, and China Netcom (NYSE: CN; 0906.HK) lost 450,000 fixed-line subs, dropping its total to 109.6 mln.

Broadband continued to help buoy the fixed-line operators. China Telecom added 710,000 new broadband users, its highest monthly gain since March 2007, to reach 37 mln and Netcom added 510,000, approximately 17% more than the monthly average over the past year, to reach 21 mln.
