Record Labels Sue Baidu, Sohu

According to reports in the Wall Street Journal, international record labels have joined forces and filed claims against Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) and Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU) subsidiary Sogou in Beijing No.1 Intermediate People's Court for providing search of and links to unlicensed copies of their copyrighted music. Bringing suit against Baidu are Sony BMG Music Entertainment (Hong Kong), Warner Music Hong Kong, and Universal Music, with combined damages of USD 9 mln requested. In the suit against Sogou, the same three labels are joined by Gold Label Entertainment Ltd., a Hong Kong-based company backed by EMI Group Ltd., with total damages of USD 7.5 mln claimed.

The dollar amounts requested represent the largest claims by the music industry in China to date.
