Rumor: Unicom to Launch WCDMA

Sina Tech, 4/18/08

According to an informed source, a China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) provincial subsidiary in the south of China may launch WCDMA services this year, with equipment to be provided by a well-known and established mainland manufacturer.

Unicom denied the reports, saying that currently the company's GSM network is being upgraded to provide GPRS, and that there are no 3G plans. The manufacturer declined to reveal more information due to the sensitivity of the matter.

The source was not aware of moves at other Unicom subsidiaries, or if this was a coordinated move by the Unicom Group.
