Online Celebrity Loses Lawsuit against Tianya

Beijing Times, 4/22/08

Online singer Zhang Keke brought suit against online community site Tianya for failing in its duty to review rumors about her posted on its forums. The Beijing No.1 Intermediate People's Court recently reached a final decision in the case, rejecting Zhang's claim of over RMB 500,000 in damages. The court found that the posts named in the lawsuit did not contain derogatory or slanderous content, and that the relevant laws did not in fact require internet operators to review the veracity of content posted. Thirdly, noting that Zhang had denied the claims made against her in the posts, the court found that she had waived her right to privacy, and that the posts therefore did not constitute a violation of that right.
