TD-SCDMA Vendors to Sell Handsets Themselves

China Business News, 4/22/08

A middle manager in a TD-SCDMA handset manufacturing firm has revealed that China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) plans to launch a second round of TD-SCDMA handset procurement in May - with devices purchased to be used exclusively for network testing. Manufacturers which obtain network access permits for their handsets will also make them available through usual retail channels.

ZTE's (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) GM for TD-SCDMA mobile phones and marketing director, Jiang Tao, confirmed that ZTE is experimenting with selling TD-SCDMA devices though retail channels, and may opt to work with a national agent.

A New Postcom official said the company is speeding up the establishment of a nationwide network of after-sales service points.
