According to industry sources, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) is to launch a second round of TD-SCDMA infrastructure investment around the time of the Beijing Olympics, including 15,000 new base stations. The TD-SCDMA network will be expanded to a further 30 second-tier cities in the east of China, and TD-SCDMA capital expenditure for the year will be over RMB 28 bln.
China Mobile is also to continue expansion and upgrade of its GSM network, with the increase in transceivers (TRXs) to surpass 2007's figure of 700,000. Over 100 cities will have GPRS networks upgraded to EDGE. China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK), urgently in need of a breakthrough, is expected to spend even more on upgrading of China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) CDMA network.
