Update: Telecom Sector Earthquake Damage

According to Zhao Zhiguo, deputy director of the Ministry of Industry and Information (MII)'s Telecom Oversight Department, up through May 29, the earthquake in south-west China had affected a total of 3,897 telecom exchanges in Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi, and a total of 28,714 mobile and PHS base stations, damaged 28,765 km of optical cable, and toppled 142,078 telecom poles in that region. Estimated direct economic loss has reached RMB 6.72 bln.
