China Telecom, Unicom to Share GSM, CDMA Stations

CWW, 6/02/08

According to information from within China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH), it has agreed with China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) that one-third of Unicom's staff will transfer to China Telecom when the latter purchases Unicom's CDMA network.

Recent reports also indicate that the two companies have reached common ground on the shared use of key equipment locations for their GSM and CDMA networks, with discussion currently focusing on maintenance responsibilities. China Unicom has presented two proposals - either an open tendering process to find a firm to carry out maintenance, or China Telecom leasing China Unicom's equipment rooms and engineers, and paying for electricity consumption.
