China Telecom Plans CDMA Handset Strategy

According to information from within China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK), the operator has held a meeting with 23 CDMA handset providers, including Huawei, ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ), Samsung, Nokia and Yulong.

Yulong's director of market planning, Gu Yong, an attendee at the meeting, revealed that while maintaining its custom-made and centralized procurement model, China Telecom would also expand sales from independent retailers. There will also be a focus on mid- to high-end CDMA phones which meet the needs of both corporate customers and individuals.

Figures from Unicom Huasheng show that in 2007 China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) sold 10.08 mln handsets, up 38% year-on-year. 9.63 mln of these were CDMA handsets sold by Huasheng, up 48%.
