China Mobile Invites Bid for TD-SCDMA/CMMB Handsets

Sina Tech, 7/07/08

Last week, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) quietly began soliciting bids for 40,000 TD-SCDMA handsets embedded with CMMB technology. Reportedly ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ), Samsung, Dopod, Yulong and Lenovo (0992.HK) are all providing testing models to China Mobile.

ZTE is providing its latest TD-SCDMA/CMMB handset, the U728, for testing. ZTE won orders for 61,000 TD-SCDMA handsets - over 30% of the 200,000 total - in China Mobile's recent second-round of bidding, leading to speculation that ZTE may also land the lion's share of contracts in this first round of CMMB-embedded TD-SCDMA handsets.
