TD-SCDMA/WAPI Terminals Coming in 2008

China Business News, 7/08/08

WAPI Industry Alliance deputy-secretary Qin Zhiqiang has stated, "dual-mode GSM/WAPI handsets are already here, and we expect to have dual-mode TD-SCDMA/WAPI terminals by the end of the year." Members of the WAPI Industry Alliance including Huawei and ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) are already working on dual-mode TD-SCDMA/WAPI products.

An industry insider claims the biggest problem with WAPI chips is excessive power consumption. Because TD-SCDMA handsets also have power consumption problems, curbing power usage is likely to be the main challenge facing the production of dual-mode TD-SCDMA/WAPI terminals.

A telecom expert has revealed that all Olympic venues already have WAPI networks installed. The WAPI Industry Alliance has also made contacts with the relevant authorities in various cities in the hope that WAPI networks will become part of local wireless development plans.
