TD-SCDMA and PHS Conflict on Frequencies

Beijing Morning Post, 7/15/08

At a recent internal meeting of the TD-SCDMA Alliance, Zhou Jianming, General Manager of China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) Technical Department, claimed that the situation surrounding spectrum availability for TD-SCDMA commercial trials is already quite urgent. He urged the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) to allocate the 1880-1920 MHz band to TD-SCDMA as soon as possible, and expressed hope that the spectrum would be available for use by the beginning of next year. A spokesperson for the MIIT stated that the organization is looking into the matter, while revealing that the 1900-1920 MHz band is currently in use by China's Personal Handyphone System (PHS).
