Operators Announce June 2008 Subscriber Totals

China's four main telecom operators have announced their subscriber totals for June 2008.

Mobile subscriber uptake increased slightly, to over 8.6 mln in June. Of this total, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) added 7.6 mln subs to reach 414.6 mln. In contrast, China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) added only 1.09 mln new subs (1.1 mln GSM subs and only 16,000 CDMA subs) to reach 170.8 mln (127.6 mln GSM subs and 43.2 mln CDMA subs). Of total new subs added in June, China Mobile took 87%, bringing its share of China's total mobile user base to 70.8%.

China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) lost 580,000 fixed-line subs, dropping its total to 214.9 mln (including 320,000 from Beijing Telecom, acquisition of which was completed in June 2008), while China Netcom (NYSE: CN; 0906.HK) added 160,000 new fixed-line subs, reversing an 11-month trend of user base decline, bringing its total to 108.5 mln.

Broadband continued to see strong growth in June, with China Telecom adding 890,000 new broadband users to reach 40.0 mln (including 90,000 from Beijing Telecom) and Netcom adding 710,000 to reach under 23.4 mln.
