China Mobile Restricts Number of Mobile Games

Communications Weekly, 7/28/08

Reliable sources have revealed that, in a bid to improve the overall quality of games on offer, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) will restrict the number of services mobile gaming service providers (SPs) can offer starting on July 31. As a result, from August 1, the Monternet games channel and China Mobile';s Baibaoxiang ("Treasure Box") gaming platform will restrict the number of single player games available. Preferential marketing and promotional treatment will be given to games run by operators who have restricted their number of games.

China Mobile will set quotas for SPs based on their rankings. An A-level provider will be able to release 5-8 times the number of games of commonly ranked SPs, with untrusted providers being restricted to 1-2 games.
