Beijing Netcom to Rent PHS Handsets during Olympics

Beijing Netcom plans to introduce a PHS handset rental service during the Olympics. Travelers staying in hotels where the service has been activated will be able to rent handsets at the front desk. Beijing Netcom will also provide multilingual location, activity and Olympic information services for tourists who have rented handsets through its 116114 phone guide hotline.

UTStarcom (Nasdaq: UTSI) will provide systems support and custom-made UT2008 PHS handsets for the service. UT2008 handsets provide English and Chinese-language interfaces.

A spokesperson for China Netcom (NYSE: CN; 0906.HK) said that the service was already in large-scale commercial use in Qingdao, with more than 4,000 handsets currently rented out.
