China Mobile to Start 2nd-Round TD-SCDMA Network Construction

China Business News, 7/31/08

A senior executive with China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has revealed that the company';s second phase of TD-SCDMA construction was recently approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and that while ";some provincial-city level companies have already begun movement,"; actual construction will begin after the Olympics. The construction will encompass 28 cities.

An equipment manufacturer revealed that approximately 30,000 new base stations will be used in the second phase of construction. Given the current state of progress, China Mobile could begin soliciting bids for the second phase before the Olympics, at the earliest.

Editor';s Note: As the MIIT has issued a telecommunication network moratorium lasting until September 20 in Olympic cities, and August 25 in other cities, it is unlikely that any network construction efforts would begin until after those dates. For more information see ";MIIT Regulates Telecom Services during Olympics";, MD 7/30/08 Issue.
