Rumor: Top100 Cooperates with Google on MP3 Search

Sina Tech, 8/05/08

Chinese legal music download site Top100.cn put its paid recharge service on hold as of August 1, citing a system upgrade as the reason. Rumor has it, however, that Top100 will cooperate with Google China on MP3 search services. A source inside Google says that Top100 will split advertising revenues with Google under a deal that is now essentially settled. Previously, Top100 had provided MP3 download services at RMB 1 per song.

Editor’s Note: This rumor comes fast on the heels of an announcement by the Independent Online Distribution Alliance (IODA), a digital distribution company for the global independent music community, and Chinse digital music distribution firm R2G of an agreement under which IODA will provide its catalogue of over one million recordings to R2G for paid download from the latter’s Wawawa Music Store. For more details on the agreement, please see “IODA, R2G Partner to Launch Online Music Store”, MD 8/04/08 issue.
