Police Detain Developer of Modified Windows XP

Sina Tech, 8/20/08

Hong Lei, webmaster of tomatolei.com and author of Tomato Garden, a highly-popular, visually-enhanced pirated version of Windows XP, has been under police detention since August 15. His website is also now offline.

In addition to Tomato Garden, there are several other modified versions of Windows XP that have also become unavailable in recent days.

Editor's Note: Microsoft has confirmed that a complaint was filed with the National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC) and the Ministry of Public Security by the Business Software Alliance (BSA) of which Microsoft is a member, stating that Tomato Garden had been infringing its rights over an extended period of time, and had caused Microsoft and other software developers, whose products were also available on Lei's site, significant losses.
