China Telecom Expects to Launch 3G Services Before Others

Shanghai Securities News, 8/29/08

China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) chairman and CEO Wang Xiaochu said at yesterday's China Telecom interim results announcement that the company is confident it will be the first operator to introduce official 3G services, as the upgrade from CDMA requires only a software upgrade. Wang said China Telecom will be able to provide 3G services within a month of the formal 3G license announcement by authorities, for a modest investment of approximately RMB 300,000 per city. In the first stage, China Telecom's services will cover 80 cities.

Wang also said that China Telecommunications Corporation hopes CDMA handset sales can become market-based within two to three years, eliminating the current subsidized sales model.
