Rumor: 3rd Round TD-SCDMA Construction to Cover 162 Cities

Industry sources recently revealed that China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has already submitted a report on its third stage of TD-SCDMA construction to Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT)'s Department of Science and Technology. The report states the company will roll out TD-SCDMA networks in 162 new cities in 2009, "not including the 28 cities involved in the second stage of construction."

Editor's Note: According to a report on CWW today, another informed source has disclosed that China Mobile plans to construct 57,421 base stations in the third phase of TD-SCDMA network construction. The total investment will be RMB 55.8 bln, including RMB 20.2 bln for wireless equipment procurement and RMB 18.8 bln for base station sites and other related expenses.
