China Mobile to Have 2G/3G Number Compatibility in March 2009

CCTIME, 11/26/08

At the 9th China Mobility International Summit currently being held in Beijing, Wei Bing, director of the China Mobile Research Institute's Department of Network Technology, stated that a comparatively large amount of work would be required to ensure users could switch between 2G and 3G networks without needing to change their SIM card, and that the work would involve modifications and upgrades to China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) bac-kend systems. Nonetheless, Wei Bing expects "that users in the core 10 cities with TD-SCDMA networks will be able to use both 2G and 3G networks without the need for a replacement SIM card by March 2008.

Editor's Note: China Mobile revealed that the company will implement a "Three Nos" policy in the second phase of TD-SCDMA commercial trials, with one of the three "nos" being no need to switch SIM cards.
