China Telecom Starts 3G Data Card Bidding

China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) has begun taking bids from over 40 manufacturers for CDMA2000 EVDO data card products, covering approximately 80 models. The company convened a meeting of manufacturers today to check on their preparedness for wireless broadband. According to a China Telecom source, the company aims to double sales of data cards this year.

In 2008 CDMA1X data cards held 75% of the data card market. China Telecom invited bids for CDMA1X data cards in August of last year, with 11 products from 4 vendors participating in the bid.
