Rumor: China Unicom, Apple to Bring iPhone to China in May

21st Century Business Herald, 2/10/09

Several senior telecom industry executives have said that that China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has made large concessions towards Apple in iPhone negotiations including a fixed subsidy for handsets, commitment to sell a specified quantity of handsets, locked handsets that only accept China Unicom SIM cards and pre-installed Apple iTunes Store software. As a result China Unicom and Apple have now come to a basic consensus and have begun to discuss finer details. Both sides believe that the first iPhones, albeit with Wi-Fi functionality removed, may hit the market on May 17 using China Unicom's WCDMA network.
