MIIT: China Adds 16 Mln Internet Users in Q1 2009

Xi Guohua, vice minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), recently revealed that the number of Internet users in China rose by 16.2 mln in the first quarter of 2009 to a total of 316 mln users. Broadband use during the quarter continued to climb, with over 90% of users accessing the Internet over broadband. By the end of 2008, assigned IPv4 addresses numbered 180 mln, with domain names reaching 16 mln. Domestic websites numbered nearly 2.9 mln by the end of 2008.

Xi stated that China's e-commerce market was worth a total of RMB 3 trln in 2008, growing 41.7% year-on-year, while online advertising was worth RMB 12 bln, growing 55.8% year-on-year. The online gaming market was worth between RMB 19 bln and RMB 20 bln, growing by approximately 50%.

According to Xi, Chinese telephone users exceeded 1 bln in March 2009. Of that number, 66.1%, or 670 mln, were mobile users.
