Rumor: Nanjing Government, Sharp Discuss 6G and 8G TFT-LCD Lines
China Business News, 7/01/09
Industry sources have revealed that the Nanjing Municipal Government and electronics manufacturer Sharp are in negotiations for an 8th generation TFT-LCD production facility, but Sharp has made it a condition that it also move its 6th generation TFT-LCD production facility to the city in Jiangsu province.
Sources say that despite the roughly RMB 10 bln price tag on the 6G plant, Nanjing can probably accept Sharp's demands. Given current costs for TFT-LCD flat-screen facility construction, the 8G plant will cost at least RMB 30 bln, most of which the Nanjing government would likely bear, while Sharp would contribute its patented technology.
Sharp's 6G TFT-LCD production facility in the city of Kameyama (Mie Prefecture), Japan, established in 2004, mainly produces 26" and 32" TFT-LCD flat-screen displays.
An anonymous source at Sharp Electronics Sales (China) said that Mikio Katayama, president of parent company Sharp Corporation, had indeed visited Nanjing to meet with local government officials and is in negotiations, but declined to divulge any details.
