Rumor: China Unicom to Release IM Software

CCTime, 8/12/09

An industry source has indicated that China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) is likely currently undergoing secret internal testing on an instant messaging (IM) tool called Xiaoyuantong (meaning roughly "Campus Communicator"), with functionality similar to China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) Fetion. The IM software is to be packaged with Unicom's 2009 edition "U-Power Campus Card" that was released between April and May. The source said that the software is named such because it will first be released for trial use among students, but that Xiaoyuantong is just a working name and may eventually be changed. The software's current test version is only able to send messages to Unicom subscribers, but not to users of China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) or China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK), and is available only for internal use at Unicom; public downloads are unavailable.
