Anti-Piracy Alliance Files First Round of Lawsuits Against Youku

The China Internet Video Anti-Piracy Alliance filed suit against Chinese online video platform Youku in Beijing's Haidian District Court on September 18, the organization's first official act in the name of IPR protection. The suit claims Youku illegally hosts 61 pirated films and television programs, with 50 belonging to Chinese VOD website Voole, 8 to Youku rival Joy.cn, and the remaining thee belonging to Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU). The alliance is preparing to file lawsuits regarding over 400 other pirated programs available on Youku. Voole has established a fifteen person team to handle the matter, and expects to bring suit regarding another 289 programs within a week.
