ZTE to Launch Windows Mobile 6.5 Handsets This Month

Sina Tech, 10/15/09

Lin Qiang, smartphone products division GM at Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ), has said that the company will release two handset models based on Windows Mobile 6.5 in China this month: the X60, customized for China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH), and the X70, customized for China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK). Lin said the phones will be priced more competitively than the iPhone.

Lin also revealed that more than half of ZTE's handset R&D resources are being trained towards smartphone development. ZTE currently offers 8 models of Windows Mobile-based phones, and expects to exceed 13 models next year, but is also engaging in production of handsets supporting other operating systems. "ZTE is committed to its strategy of providing operator-customized handsets, and if the operators have a strong preference for another operating system, we can easily accommodate them", said Lin.
