MIIT Announces September 2009 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its September 2009 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:

Telecom operating revenues were RMB 77.0 bln (USD 11.3 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 645.1 bln (USD 94.5 bln), up 3.3% over the same 9-month period of 2008. Core business services accounted for RMB 625.7 bln of the cumulative total, up 3.1% YoY. Capital expenditure for the month came to 35.8 bln (USD 5.2 bln), bringing the year-to-date total to RMB 207.9 bln (USD 30.4 bln), a 24.5% year-on-year increase.

Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 7.1 mln in September, with mobile subscribers growing by approximately 9.3 mln to over 719.8 mln, and fixed line subscribers dropping by 2.2 mln to approximately 324 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed-line and PHS, the PHS subscriber base declined by more than 2.3 mln subs to 53.2 mln, while traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers decreased by 118,000 to 270.5 mln.

A total of over 574.6 bln SMS messages were sent during the first nine months of 2009, a 10.2% increase YoY.

Broadband added 2.1 mln new registered users in September for a 9-month cumulative increase of 16.4 mln to reach a total of 99.3 mln nationwide. In contrast, dial-up lost another 194,000 users, lowering the total dial-up user base to 9.0 mln.
