Netease Tech, 11/11/09
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) signed the Chinese telecommunications industry's first voluntary energy consumption reduction agreement today. Under the terms of the agreement, China Mobile will seek to reduce per-business unit energy consumption by 20% (based on 2008 energy consumption) by 2010, resulting in energy savings of 11.8 bln kilowatt-hours.
China Mobile president Wang Jianzhou said that his company will promote energy-saving technology and designs in its communications networks in order to raise the energy efficiency of telecom system and peripheral equipment, and deploy smart wind cooling technologies for mobile base stations, as well as wind, solar, and other renewable energy sources, on a large scale. Wang added that China Mobile has already signed "Green Action Plan" strategic partnership memoranda with 53 major suppliers calling for the joint drafting and implementation of energy efficiency ratings standards for telecommunications equipment, increased adoption of "green packaging" for communications products, and joint R&D on energy-saving base station cooling units, as well as the promotion of mini-SIM cards and recycling and reuse.
