Rumor: CBC to Charge Vendors for CMMB, Users Free

China Business Post, 1/08/10

According to a source from within the China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting (CMMB) industry chain, the China Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), the nationwide operator of CMMB mobile TV services, has officially determined its fee policy for 2010.

For the three-year period from 2010 through 2012, CBC will primarily collect fees from CMMB terminal manufacturers, with the fee set at RMB 300 per handset for a 3-year CMMB reception package. This fee is to be paid by the terminal manufacturers; terminal users will be able to watch CMMB broadcasts for free within this 3-year period, and will not be required to pay any other fees.

CBC will offer subsidies of RMB 162 per new customer acquired during that 3-year period to major CMMB terminal manufacturers.
