Rumor: Shanda to Establish Online Travel Site

Beijing Business Today, 1/12/10

According to informed sources, Shanda Interactive Entertainment (Nasdaq: SNDA) has officially launched a "Shanda Travel" project, and hopes to launch a travel site that integrates Shanda's online and offline resources. The source said that Shanda Travel will operate independently.

Shanda Travel is currently recruiting in Shanghai. The project is being run by former Tianya BBS chief editor Song Zheng. Song said that he has been in Shanghai working on this project for six months. Hu Maohua, former technical director for Tencent (0700.HK), is also taking part in the project.

Other internal sources say that Shanda Travel's entire 20+ person product team is comprised of former Google China employees, primarily developers. The development staff will expand to 80 within the year, while Shanda plans to expand the company's total staff to 110 by the end of the year.
