Rumor: Google Departure Official, Government Considers Penalties

According to industry sources, Google CEO Eric Schmidt told Google China employees in a meeting today that discussion with the Chinese government had failed and Google China would be formally closed. Google will allow Google China employees to apply for positions in the company's global headquarters and Asia-Pacific branch.

Another source reported that China's State Council will convene a meeting tonight to determine what punitive actions to take against Google.
