Rumor: China Unicom to Launch Fixed-Line/3G Video Calling

Netease Tech, 1/19/10

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has reportedly completed tests for local video calling between fixed-line phones and 3G handsets, according to an industry insider who estimates the service will officially launch in three months. China Unicom will first launch the service at the end of Q1 2010 in municipalities such as Beijing. In the initial stage, users will only be able to make fixed-line/3G video calls in these trial municipalities. It is not certain whether the trials will prove successful. The source said that fees would be based on pre-existing fixed-line video calling rates.
