Chinese online video site Ku6 announced today that it would seek RMB 1 mln in damages from rival video site Youku in a defamation suit over Youku's allegations that Ku6 had misreported its World Cup viewership figures. The Haidian District People's Court in Beijing has accepted the case for review, and will hear arguments in open court starting August 16.
Ku6 alleges that Youku sought through public pronouncements to create the impression that Ku6 had falsified traffic figures for World Cup viewership, and contacted Ku6's advertising clients and ad resellers via SMS to further spread its allegations, seriously damaging Ku6's reputation. Ku6 is demanding that Youku immediately issue a clarification, cease all malicious and defamatory behavior, and issue a public apology.
