Rumor: China Unicom to Add 50 Mln 3G Users in 2011

CWW, 1/17/11

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has set an internal target to add 50 mln new 3G subscribers in 2011, according to a source in the operator's marketing division. Branches in Tianjin and Guangdong have localized 3G marketing and begun promoting new packages and services tailored to local consumer demand.

Editor's Note: In the first 11 months of 2010, China Unicom added approximately 10 mln 3G (WCDMA) subscribers, putting it on target for an end-of-year total of 14 mln. From May to November 2010, Unicom consistently recorded a net increase of roughly 1 mln 3G subscribers a month; to reach its new goal of adding 50 mln 3G subs in 2011, Unicom will need to more than quadruple this figure to over 4 mln new 3G subs a month.
