Rumor: China Unicom iPhone Users Exceed 1.2 Mln in 2010

China Business News, 1/20/11

A source inside China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) revealed yesterday that as of the end of November 2010, the operator had sold approximately 1 mln units of the iPhone, meaning that - assuming a monthly growth rate of 200,000 to 300,000 new users - China Unicom had more than 1.2 mln iPhone subscribers by the end of 2010.

A spokesperson for Unicom said that monthly sales of 20,000 to 30,000 units would be considered good for any popular handset, but that even with shortages of available stock, the iPhone had "easily cleared" sales of 200,000 to 300,000 per month. If not for the shortages, the spokesperson said, monthly sales of 400,000 to 500,000 were "perfectly imaginable."
